Balance bikes, scooters

A balance bike is a bicycle without pedals that the child pushes along with their feet. It suits children from about 2 years. The principle is simple: the child learns balance from the start, so moving on to a normal bicycle later needs no stabilisers and very little practice.

The size criterion is not age but inside leg length: sitting on the saddle, the child must reach the ground with the whole foot. Saddle height must be adjustable.

Wooden models are lighter and quieter; metal ones are tougher and often have a brake. Wheels are either EVA foam (no pumping needed, but firmer) or pneumatic (softer, better on rough ground).

Scooters suit children from around 3 years. For under-5s and 6s a three-wheel lean-to-steer model is safer. Helmets and pads are in the "Helmets and protection" section.
