Car seats

A car seat is the only child product on which safety in a crash directly depends. So the first things to check are not price or colour, but whether the seat matches the child's height and weight and whether it can be installed securely in your particular car.

Seats are classified by weight or by height. By weight: 0–13 kg for newborns, 0–18 kg, 9–36 kg and universal 0–36 kg. Under the newer R129 (i-Size) standard they are classified by height: 40–87 cm, 76–150 cm, 100–150 cm.

Up to 15 months a child must travel rearward-facing — this is a requirement, not a recommendation. In practice many specialists advise keeping a child rearward-facing for as long as the seat allows.

Isofix is the most convenient fitting method: the seat clicks into the car's anchor points and the chance of an installation error is far lower than with a seat belt. Isofix bases and adapters are in a separate section.

Check that the seat suits your car model before buying. Seats are marked UNIVERSAL (fits all cars), SEMI UNIVERSAL (does not fit all) or SPECIFIC (fits only certain models). Also consider the width — a child in a winter snowsuit may not fit into a narrow seat.
